Pretty cool by itself, but now it is time for part 2 of the tutorial, where I will show you how to personalize it for your family tree.
This is where you want to get really comfortable. I sat on my butt on that couch for literally SIX HOURS, watching episode after episode of television on Netflix.
Step One: Similar to how I make wall signs, I used my laptop as a light box and traced the names onto a piece of paper.
You can also just freehand, if you’re good at that.
Step Two: Then cut out all of the names and arrange them on the tree where you want them, and tape them there.
Step Three: Once everything is where you want it, take a pen and trace really hard over the names. It will dent the wood and you will be able to see the transfer. Take a pen or pencil and trace the dents!
Step Four: Take your amazing wood burning tool that you have practiced with for days since you bought it and trace your letters. This will take a LONG time. You will want to make sure that you are in a ventilated area (open the windows) because wood burning over the stain can make you a little dizzy and ill-feeling.
* I bought my wood burning tool from Hobby Lobby for $15 dollars. It came with five different tips and I am so happy with my new toy!
Isn’t that just gorgeous?!
This really does take a long time, but it is also gratifying because you literally can see it getting beautiful.
I went back to some of the words I’d already burnt and perfected the letters, making them all have equal weight.
Step Five: Once you are finished burning the words, you can seal it with Furniture Paste Wax. It makes it really shiny and lovely and perfect looking!
And here it is!!! The finished project!
(I somehow deleted the good After picture I took, unfortunately. But this is the finished product!)
I am telling you, it’s not one of my “quick and easy” DIY tutorials but it turned out beautifully and it was well worth the time! I’ll be making one of these for my mom soon! Maybe Christmas?
One of my favorite parts, is as long as I have my wood burning tool I can keep adding names as my siblings-in-law get married and we all start having children. It is a family tree project that adapts and grows with the family, which makes it lasting!
Anyway, I love it! I think my mother-in-law will love it! I think you would love it if you took the time to make it!
Have a great day!
